Air Quality Monitoring in Response to Heightened Public Awareness of Potential Hazards

In detecting and mitigating pollution sources not emanating from a smokestack, fenceline monitoring around industrial sites and energy pipelines is becoming more critical as facilities must continue to minimize any potential release of particulate or chemical matter into local communities. Typical facilities have internal monitoring to ensure proper operation and control. Fenceline monitors are often provided as a backup to the regular monitoring and control system and can provide preliminary information if the situation requires it.

 

Communities near stationary emission sources such as petroleum refineries, petrochemical plants, waste incineration facilities, or ports may be subjected to pollutant levels higher than is seen at air quality monitoring stations located in the surrounding areas. Therefore, a portable carbon monitor could help identify fugitive emissions and quickly identify local sources of pollution.

 

Monitors may be stand-alone or networked together to cover an entire perimeter. Depending on the type of facility, monitors may report an issue directly to operations personnel for correction using a combination of visual and audio alarms or report directly to facility computers or even a cell phone.
